I think of intentions as the why behind what we do and goals as the what and how.
The intention is more about the attitude or about cultivating a mindset I bring to my life. When I set an intention, it’s usually about what kind of person I want to be, a state of mind that can keep me grounded and aligned with my values. For example, I might say, “I intend to be more healthy with myself today.” This is the state of mind that I want to embrace today. Now there are many different approaches to becoming healthy.
Goals are action-oriented and have definite outcomes. It is about making something happen through planning or putting in efforts. Intentions often inspire or guide the goals you set. So, the intention is like planting a seed in your mind, and the goal is the process or action you take to nurture that seed and watch it grow into something.
How to set intentions

1. Identify your sabotaging behaviors and habits.
Identify the areas of your lives that need a makeover. One of the biggest causes of inviting failure into your life is the inaction towards your goals. I wanted to publicize my writings, but for a subsequent amount of time, I did nothing. I procrastinated when it came to establishing a daily writing routine. This procrastination snowballed into a guilt of not doing justice to my talent. Identifying your sabotaging habits itself may not bring instant catharsis, but it can imbibe accountability in you. That’s why, this should be the crucial first step of how to set intentions.
2. Cultivate a positive mindset.
It’s amazing what a positive mindset can do! We spend half our time in a day battling with existential doubt. We constantly dream about having our desired life but then hammer it with self-doubt and unrealistic planning. Our daily schedule becomes noncommittal, and runs on autopilot with no distinct goals in mind. Congratulations! Now you have one more problem to deal with in your life: mental anguish. Our minds misconstrue this anguished state of mind as normal and gullibly start looking for similar scenarios. When you dwell on negativity, your mind highlights situations that affirm it. This is why it is difficult to break the cycle of negativity.
Ask yourself: Follow these reinforced beliefs? Or take control and reinforce a better, positive mindset?
Embracing a positive mindset means believing in many possibilities—that every minor setback is just another opportunity to reevaluate your actions. Celebrate your small wins or be your own cheerleader to grow your mindset. I vividly envisioned myself as a successful blogger, and that vision gave me the confidence to take the first step. It creates a mental space where your ideas thrive.
3. Be specific to set clear intentions.
I read an encouraging statement somewhere: you have got everything you need to make your intentions come true. Rightly said, intentions become more powerful if you have an aim. Instead of vague aims like “I want to save money,” try focusing on “I want to save money to avoid unnecessary spending.” You will feel more motivated, and your actions will be empowered with this clarity. Many external things can sideline our goals, but intentions stop us from drifting from our paths, realigning us in the necessary direction.
4. Keep them in the present tense.
We are what we think about. When I speak about living in the present, its meaning goes simply beyond being present physically in the moment. It is applicable to the mental presence too. Write your intentions in a present tense. I came to know about this habit a little later during my growth journey, but the power of intention can’t deny its potential. While many people go with “I intend to…,” I liked the idea of following a present approach to setting intentions.
Believing that I am living the life I want, which is actually my future goal, entails more strength to my values and goals. If I say, “I am saving money to avoid unnecessary savings,” it produces a more positive effect as if you are already doing it and inching near your aim. Whatever affirmations you choose, remember that there are no rigid rules or limitations. You are free to follow your belief in whatever way. This is the power of intentions.
